Based on literature data analyses entomological collections of Croatian Natural History Museum and processing of newly collected materials, the following number of Macrolepidoptera species were determined : 630 for Gorski kotar, 89 for National Park Risnjak and 499 for the region of upper part of Kupa. The number of registrated taxa is 75-85 % of species present in Gorski kotar, 80-90 % in upper part of river Kupa and only 15 % of potentional species in National Park Risnjak. Those data show that knowlege of Macrolepidoptera fauna of National Park Risnjak is superficial and unsuficient. The families with greatest number of registrated species are Geometridae (203 species) and Noctuide (181 species).
The zoogeographical analyses showed that euro-sibirian elements are dominate because adeqate ecological conditions. The area of National Parf Risnjak should be extended on the upper parts of river Kupa for the following reasons: great number of swamp and aquatic biotops, damp meadows, wich have become rare in Europe with the consequentual endangering of species. Those two regions are only 10 kilometers a part but they are greatly different and compliment each other in faunistic characteristics. Six out of seven Macrolepidoptera species registrated as new faunistic elements in latest explorations in Gorski kotar were found in Risnjak : Mormo maura L., Amphipyra tragopoginis Cl., Caradrina kadenii Free., Crocalis tusciaria Bkh., Calostigia olivata D.& S. and Gnophos obscurata D.&S. (KUCINIC et al., 1993, 1993a), and 13 out of 89 species were not found in the upper part of river Kupa.
The future explorations should be primarly in region of NP Risnjak, and in processing of Macrolepidoptera group, the upper part of river Kupa should be included.
