OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FOR 6TH EMINar

The 6th EMINar will be held in Croatia at the idyllic island of Dugi Otok, just "around the corner" of Kornati National Park, from 2-5 April 1997. This is the chance for you to visit this beautiful part of the Mediterranean and to meet and discuss with young marine researchers from all over Europe. A field trip is planned to two National Parks and a Natural Park which are in the vicinity of Sali (Dugi Otok) with the possibility of SCUBA diving for those who are interested.

The 1997 EMINar will be organised jointly with Association Eurocoast-Croatia under the responsibility of the Department of Biology, University of Zagreb. President of the local organising committee is Dr. Tatjana Bakran-Petricioli (E-mail:

Accomodation on the island of Dugi Otok, in Sali, will be in a Bed&Breakfast type basic hotel but with full board meals.

As many of you will know, EMINars are the yearly international scientific meetings of the EMIN group. Since EMIN is devoted to young researchers, only THEY are invited to give a presentation. However, on each EMINar, there is one well-known senior EMINent scientist to give a presentation on a matter of general interest. Also, at the beginning of each session, there will be a "keynote" speech from a well established junior resercher.
The set-up of EMIN meetings is essentialy different from ordinary conferences: the oral presentations are more extensive than usual (over 30 minutes) and cover a large piece of research work; usually a PhD thesis. The presentations are supposed to be set in an interdisciplinary context and should be made understandable for a wide public of marine researchers. This implies that a larger part of the presentation than usual is devoted to a general introduction to the subject.
All participants are expected to present their work, either orally or by poster. Abstracts of the presentations will be published on the Internet. To enable PhD students and other young researchers with limited budgets to attend an EMINar, there are no registration costs, and board and lodging are kept at a minimum price. Occasionally (like last time in Lithuania), travel costs can be reimbursed as well.
However, only those who are registered EMIN-members and who paid their EMIN-subscription fees (DFL 35,-) are allowed to attend an EMINar. As far as things are looking now you will have to find resources for travel expenses yourself, the other costs (including the fieldtrip) will be covered by different sponsorships.
