The Flora of Croatia Check-list was first elaborated within the project entitled The Biological Data Base and Geographic Information System, which is co-sponsored by the Croatian Ministry of Science and Technology (1-08-330). There is a high scientific interest and a significant practical need for the elaboration of this Check-list. Check-lists are a nomenclatural and taxonomic basis for further and more comprehensive activities, such as developing a data base and the preparation of The Flora and The Atlas of Flora.
The lack of such works makes Croatia fall significantly behind its neighbouring countries and is the principal cause for the insufficient representation and inadequate analyses of Croatia's flora in smaller and larger works. A long botanical tradition in these parts and a number of fundamental works by foreign (ASCHERSON 1869; BECK von MANNAGETTA 1901, 1902:, BORB*S 1890; DEGEN 1936-1938; FREYN 1879; HAYEK 1927-33; JANCHEN 1908; MALY 1907, 1936; PORTENSCHLAG-LEDERMEYER 1824; TURILL 1929; etc. and Croatian (ADAMOVIC 1909, 1911, 1915, 1929; BOSNJAK 1925; DOMAC 1979; GJURASIN 1933; HARAC 1905; HIRC 1884, 1903-1912, 1913, 1917 i dr.; HORVAT 1954, 1962 i dr.; HORVATIC 1933, 1934, 1939, 1963, 1967; etc.; PEVALEK 1930; ROSSI 1913, 1924, 1930, 1932; SCHLOSSER et VUKOTINOVIC 1857, 1869, 1876; TRINAJSTIC 1974-83, 1973-86 i dr; VISIANI 1826, 1842-1852: etc.) authors can importantly facilitate this job. The check-list of the flora is an axis of the floristic taxonomic part of the biological data base and is organised according to the international standards (ALLKIN et BISBY 1984, JURY 1991, MORAIN 1993). In addition to the primary aim, the check-list of the flora, the project is intended to gather information on the endangered and endemic taxa as well as the Croatian nomenclature and the original publications. With the aim of preventing the potential dilemmas about the taxonomic, nomenclatural and distributional status of the individual taxa The General Remarks, Basic Taxa Treatment Criteria and The Regulations have been elaborated. An internal check-list organisation has been standardised to secure the uniformity of The Croatia's Flora Check-list which is a joint effort of a large number of authors.
In spite of all our care, the Check-list is bound to contain impersonal, idiosyncratic and unintentional errors of technical, nomenclatural and taxonomic type. They are intended to undergo gradual correction within the Notulae ad ndicem Florae Croatiae in the Natura Croatica journal.
