and The Nature Conservancy (TNC).
Support for this homepage is also provided from the U.S. National Biological Service (NBS).
ABI was formed by and works to benefit the network of biodiversity
data centers across the Western Hemisphere known as the Network
of Natural Heritage Programs and Conservation Data Centres. This
network currently includes eighty-five biodiversity data centers
across the Western Hemisphere (including Hawaii). These programs
and data centers exist in the United States, Canada, Latin America
and the Caribbean and collectively represent the largest ongoing
effort to collect standardized data on endangered plants, animals
and ecosystems.

Conservation Atlas of Tropical Forests, in collaboration with

the digital copies of which are maintained in WCMC's Biodiversity
Map Library (BML).

Denmark. The main goal of the EEA and its wider network, EIONET,
is to deliver high quality environmental information to the European

- HELCOM (Helsinki Commission) Home Page,
Finland. The first Convention on the Protection of the Marine
Environment of the Baltic Sea Area was signed in 1974 by the coastal
states of the Baltic Sea at that time. In 1992 , a new Convention
was signed by all the countries bordering on the Baltic Sea and
by the European Economic Community. The governing body of the
Convention is the Helsinki Commission - Baltic Marine Environment
Protection Commission - also known as HELCOM. The present contracting
parties to HELCOM are Denmark, Estonia, European Community, Finland,

USA. The Bergen Swamp Preservation Society (BSPS) is chartered
by the New York State Board of Regents to protect fragile wetlands

and protects more than 3000 acres of unique wetlands in 5 locations
in upstate New York.

- California State Listed Threatened and Endangered Animals and Plants (1992),
State of California, Department of Fish & Game, USA.The 1992
Annual Report summarizes the status of 73 animals and 213 plants
listed as rare, threatened, or endangered by the California Fish
and Game Commission. Four species of plants and one animal designated
as candidates for listing are also reviewed. Legislation affecting
endangered species, funding programs, and habitat preservation
programs is also discussed.
- Center for Plant Conservation.
The Center for Plant Conservation (CPC), hosted at the Missouri
Botanical Garden (St. Louis, USA), is dedicated to conserving
rare plants native to the United States in an integrated plant
conservation context through a systematic national program of
ex situ plant conservation, research, and education. A consortium
of twenty-five of America's leading botanical gardens and arboreta,
CPC maintains 486 of America's rarest plant species in live, protective
custody in the National Collection of Endangered Plants. The Center
also complements and supports in situ conservation efforts by
implementing rare plant research and education programs, organizing
rare plant task forces around the country, and producing strategic
plans for plant conservation initiatives.

for Central Appalachian Biodiversity Project, based in Hedgesville,
West Virginia (USA). The site provides links to Heartwood and
other groups working to bring ecological sanity to the Appalachians.
The CABP Home Page will provide timely information pertaining
to the Central Appalachian Bioregion.

- The National Collection of Endangered Plants,
from the Missouri Botanical Garden, St. Louis, USA. As of September
15, 1995, the National Collection of Endangered Plants contained
seeds, cuttings and whole plants of 486 plant species native to
the United States. The Collection is stored at the 25 gardens
and arboreta that form the network known as the Center for Plant
Conservation.
- National Parks and Conservation Association (NPCA),
USA. America's only private nonprofit citizen organization dedicated
solely to protecting, preserving, and enhancing the U.S. National
Park System. NPCA was founded in 1919 and today has more than
450,000 members.
- Natural Heritage Network,
USA. This project is a joint effort of The Nature Conservancy
and the Association for Biodiversity Information (ABI). Support
is also provided from the U.S. National Biological Service. ABI
represents 85 biodiversity information centers across the Western
Hemisphere (and Hawaii) known as the Network of Natural Heritage
Programs and Conservation Data Centers. Central and regional support
to the network is provided by The Nature Conservancy. Biodiversity
centers exist in the United States, Canada, and Latin America.
