The original Ethnobotany database is an SQL-based database developed
by James A. Duke and Stephen M. Beckstrom-Sternberg. It is housed
at the National Germplasm Resources Laboratory (NGRL), Agricultural
Research Service (ARS), U.S. Department of Agriculture. The database
contains 80,000 records of plant uses world-wide.
- FoodplantDB.
This publication reviewed approximately 80 years of literature,
back to around 1850, listing 1,112 species in 444 genera of plants
among120 families, used for food by the North American Indians.
- MPNADB, Medicinal Plants of Native America.
This database is based on a two-volume book of the same name published
in 1986 by the Museum of Anthropology of the University of Michigan.
The database - which contains 17,634 items representing the medicinal
uses of 2,147 species from 760 genera and 142 families by 123
different native American groups - was built over a period of
about 10 years with support from the National Endowment for the
Humanities, the National Science Foundation, and the University
of Michigan-Dearborn.
- PhytochemDB.
The original Phytochemeco is an SQL-based database developed by
James A. Duke and Stephen M. Beckstrom-Sternberg. It is housed
at the National Germplasm Resources Laboratory (NGRL), Agricultural
Research Service (ARS), U.S. Department of Agriculture. The database
consists primarily of plant chemical data, including quantity,
taxonomic occurence, and chemical activity. Several interconnected
databases included under the Phytochemeco aegis are an ethnobotany
(plant uses) DB, and an ecological DB (including plant geography
and climate).

In November, 1995, Dr. Ethan Russo, a neurologist, spent two months
in Eastern Peru's rainforest looking for plants to treat headaches.
You'll find photos of the plants he gathered here, along with

- Canadian Poisonous Plants Information System
by Derek Munro, Biological Resources Divison, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
This information system provides details taken from literature
references for over 250 plants that can poison livestock, pets
and humans in Canada. Its interactive search engine provides information
on plant names, distribution, toxic plant parts, toxic chemicals,
and symptoms of poisoning.

USA. This is planned as an extensive collection of plant and lesion
images with text concerning the botany, chemistry, toxicology,
diagnosis and prevention of poisoning of animals by plants. When
completed, the public will be able to find pictures and information
about toxic plants by: alphabetical listing of botanical names
by genus and species), the plants' habit and appearance, the type
of poisons present, systems and organs most affetced by poison
(Nerve, heart, liver, skin, etc.), species of animals commonly
affected.

UK. The National Poisons Unit at Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital

identification system for poisonous plants. The project addresses

Accident & Emergency Departments, for the rapid and accurate
identification of plants suspected of causing poisoning. The PLATO

you aware of which common plants are known to be poisonous.
- Poison Ivy, Western Poison Oak, Poison Sumac

Three Canadian plants contain a poisonous sap that is the causative
agent of Rhus-dermatitis, the most widespread skin disorder affecting
Canadians. The three poisonous plants are poison ivy (Rhus radicans
L.), western poison oak (Rhus diversiloba T. & G.), and poison
sumac (Rhus vernix L.).
